 Malta and Gozo offer a good choice of wreck dives, some shallow, some down to 40 meters in depth. Explore old patrol boats and tug boats, a temptation many divers cannot resist. The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course teaches you how to map a wreck, learn the safety rules and hazards of wreck diving. Bringing the past and present together, this course enables you to get a closer look at wrecks, their historical and cultural significance. The more understanding you have about a wreck and the more knowledge you gain, the more excitement and enjoyment it brings to each dive.  

Who should take this course?

Scuba divers on Gozo who are up for a challenge. Learn to explore and gain insight into the history of a wreck. Some wrecks are sunk to form artificial reefs, others have a historical background going back hundreds of years. Scuba divers who want to explore the inside of such wrecks, nevertheless, if it is a boat, an aeroplane or anything else, will learn how to identify features of wrecks that will bring them back to life. Understanding simple concepts of underwater mapping and measurement will bring them back much enjoyment into your wreck dives. 

What will you learn?

Maltese waters have many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws which intend to safeguard their cultural and historical significance. The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course teaches the importance of respecting wrecks, along with reviewing guidelines for research and wreck penetration.

During four open water dives you will learn:

  • Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants
  • How to survey and map a wreck
  • Explore the wreck using penetration lines and reels
  • Learn safety rules and hazards of wreck penetration
  • Considerations about safety for exploring and navigating wrecks

What scuba gear you will use?

  • Underwater slate and pencil
  • Reel and line for wreck penetration

What learning material do you require?

The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Manual


  • Participants must be 15 years of age or older
  • Minimum PADI Adventure Diver or equivalent from another training agency
  • Participants under the age of 18 years must have parent or guardian consent
  • Complete a diver medical questionnaire declaring you are in good physical health
