Who should take this course?
Those who want to give answers and not be the one who must ask “what species of fish was that”? It is an exciting experience for anyone who is interested in marine life and its animals. Learning to recognise what is out there on the reef is fun.
This course focuses primarily on fish family identification. Once you have learnt the families and their characteristics, you can use this knowledge anywhere around the world.
What will you learn?
This course will introduce you to the most common fish families and species found in Maltese waters. Some fish look similar in shape and size, or in their markings and colouring, being able to identify them makes your dives more enjoyable.
Here we will look at:
Survey techniques and strategies to identify fish
Characteristics of local fish families and species and how to identify those
What you can do to protect aquatic life and learn about Project-AWARE
What scuba gear you will use?
Basic scuba diving equipment
Underwater slate and pencil to record what you see
Fish identification card for Maltese waters (can be purchased at DiveSmart)
What learning materials do you require?
Fish Identification slates are available to purchase at DiveSMART
Fish Identification books for reference are available to use at DiveSMART
Participants must be 10 years of age, or older
Minimum PADI Junior Open Water Diver or equivalent from another training agency
Participants under the age of 18 years must have parent or guardian consent
Complete a diver medical questionnaire declaring that you are in good physical health
