Learn to dive on Gozo!
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience at Dive Smart Gozo offers you your first breath underwater. Discover scuba diving gives you that first taste of breathing underwater and experiencing the sights below the waves. Until now the underwater world has been available on movies or TV, now it is real. You meet fellow beginner divers, talk only about learning to dive and it puts you on the pathway of addiction to the underwater world.
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience on Gozo allows you to try scuba diving with no previous experience. To participate you must be 10 years of age or older. We, at Dive Smart Gozo, give you the chance to breathe and experience weightlessness underwater while you dive. You watch your bubbles ascend, see the underwater world in colour and you try something exhilarating and fun.
What does this experience involve?
Our PADI Scuba Diver experience on Gozo is split into three sections. Let’s take a look at each section:
Our PADI professional Instructor will be present at all times, both in and out of the water. The first step in the classroom involves filling out a medical questionnaire to make sure you are fit to dive. Our small theory lesson introduces you to changes to your body when you go beneath the waves. You learn a little about pressure and depth and how to communicate using hand signals. The equipment you use will be introduced and how it works. This session is hands-on, informative and fun.
2. Skills and Shallow water training
Now the adventure begins. Your PADI Instructor chooses a dive site that is shallow and has conditions like a swimming pool. Here the water will be salty, but shallow and calm. During this session, you watch your instructor demonstrate a few skills that help to make a discover scuba dive comfortable and enjoyable. Watch these skills carefully, you will be asked each, in turn, to repeat what you have just seen. It is easy, stay calm and remember to breathe and not hold your breath. After you have accomplished that mission, we practice swimming and breathing in shallow water. When you are comfortable with using your fins and you can keep your balance, you will go with your instructor into a little deeper water – this is the exciting bit, the dive begins!
3. The Dive
Your instructor slowly leads you into deeper water, and you follow behind. Try to swim with your legs and fins, no hands. You swim forwards, your instructor swims backwards watching you. As you swim along watching the fish and looking around you slowly progress deeper to a maximum depth of 9 meters if you are comfortable. If you are not too confident, your instructor swims at a depth that suits you. The fish and marine life you can observe close up, experience the bright and vibrant colours underwater in the shallow depths.
Try to do the following:
Your dive lasts longer when you swim with your legs and fins, try not to use your arms and hands. Swim slowly, this leads to lower air consumption. Remember, when your cylinder is at 50 Bar, it is time to come out. Look around you, under rocks and overhangs, marine life live just everywhere. Enjoy the underwater world, observe it but do not touch – you can see some funny and weird critters down there.
