WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THE PADI INSTRUCTOR EXAM?

The Instructor Exam is split into 4 segments and is conducted over 2 days.

  1. Written Exams
    1. Dive Theory – 12 multiple choice questions on each of the following subjects, dive physics, physiology of diving, equipment, skills and the environment and recreational dive planner.
    2. General Standards – 50 multiple choice questions about PADI standards and their application. This is an OPEN BOOK exam using the Instructor Manual and PADI’s Guide to Teaching.
  2. Confined Water Presentation – You will be assigned one skill to teach in confined water. A briefing and debriefing will be given from you to the other instructor candidates, who will be playing the role of students. They will be asked to make some deliberate mistakes assigned by the examiner for you to identify and correct. If you make a big mistake, you will be given another skill and a second chance! You will also be assigned 5 skills from the Divemaster skill circuit to demonstrate as if to students, at Instructor level quality.
  3. Open Water Presentation – You will be assigned two skills to teach in open water. A briefing and debriefing will be given from you to the other instructor candidates, who will be playing the role of students. They will be asked to make some deliberate mistakes assigned by the examiner for you to identify and correct. Your score from both skills is then averaged to give you a final score. No second chances! You will also be asked to demonstrate Rescue Exercise 7 on the surface.
  4. Classroom presentation – You will be assigned one question from a PADI knowledge review. Your job is to explain the answer to this question assuming your students have been having difficulties with it.  The presentation should be between 5-8 minutes long.
