The course starts with a day in the classroom focusing on the design of the PADI system and how to use it in a flexible manner to give our participants the best possible training.

You will complete a dive theory written exam, quite early in the course. Around day 2-3 usually, to see what level you are at, while still allowing us enough time to remediate any issues you may have.

You will teach at least four confined water skill presentations and play the role of student when the other instructor candidates are teaching theirs.

You will teach at least four open water skill presentations and play the role of student when the other instructor candidates are teaching theirs.

You will teach three classroom presentations.

You will develop your rescue skills to demonstration quality level required at the IE.

There are classroom sessions, discussing the various PADI courses you will be qualified to teach as well as business and marketing related issues.

What will you learn?

The IDC is normally held 9 days before the Instructor Exam (IE).

The unique PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.
Dive professionals, who hold an instructor rating with another diver training organisation, may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognises prior instructor training and provides a path to become a PADI Instructor.

What learning materials do you require?

Here you have two options:

  • PADI IDC Crew Pack is required
  • Register for IDC Online or through DiveSMART. There are nine interactive knowledge development sections, also register for Dive Theory Online, if you have not already completed it or, it was longer than one year ago
